ART

Looking For Dragon Smoke

The art displayed here shows a varied mix of styles and media, essentially a scrapbook consisting of everything from doodles on scrap paper to gallery pieces, from brush and ink (see above), to soft lead on oiled panel, to collage, to tradition drawing, to oil on canvas, and probably much else. You will no doubt  notice that I like to take samples form a work to create an entirely new and separate work, and that some work appear as both color and black and white versions, as I feel each version offers its own unique aesthetic.

The oldest piece dates back to 1969 (A study from Rockwell)---I was 16 years old and drew it for my late grandmother---right up until 2019, when emphasis on spontaneous expression and sensitivity to line appear (Degas, or Zen painting Masters Liang Kai and Shibayama Zenkei for instance) yet equally influenced by western abstract expressionism (Robert Motherwell, Jasper Johns, and Robert Rauschenberg, especially, come to mind).

Though one might be challenged to guess it, my work (and probably all my creative work) is also influenced by poet Robert Bly's essay, "Searching For Dragon Smoke," and his discussion of "duende" in which he alludes to the creative power of darkness.

“The darkening of the world makes the irrationality of art rational: radically darkened art [die radikale verdunkelte Kunst].” --- Adorno

(Please note: Frustratingly, due to technical issues on the webpage that I cannot seem to resolve, the pieces are not displayed their full-size in either the Gallery or the Quick View option.)
